UPDATED August 2, 2007

Our beloved Jabba (Mao Bao Jabbababababarbarann), passed away on 7/12/2007. Postmortem examination showed the cause of death to be gastrointestinal pythiosis. He had a pythiosis tumor removed in October of 2006, and we had hoped all of the pythium had been removed. Sadly, that did not turn out to be the case, and his stomach filled with more pythium. To learn more about this (blessedly) uncommon fungus-like organism, you can visit this site:

Examination was done for amyloidosis, including Congo red stain, and there was no evidence of any amyloid tissue.

Pythiosis is not hereditary. Although we miss Jabba greatly, we are glad to know that his siblings, etc., are no more at risk of developing this disease than any other dogs. Be aware that the initial symptoms of pythiosis can appear to be a case of IBD that is unresponsive to normal treatments. If your dog is diagnosed with IBD but does not improve with treatment, be certain your vet is aware of the possibility of pythiosis.
